Heat transfer vinyl is the most common first shirt project for cutting machine owners.

What you need

  • Heat transfer vinyl (HTV)
  • A cutting machine and mat
  • A weeding tool
  • A heat press or household iron
  • A protective sheet such as a Teflon sheet or parchment
  • A pre washed shirt (skip fabric softener)

Steps

  1. Mirror the design. HTV is cut from the back, so mirror before cutting. This is the most common beginner mistake.
  2. Place the HTV shiny side down on the mat.
  3. Cut with the matching material setting.
  4. Weed the extra vinyl.
  5. Pre press the shirt for a few seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  6. Position the design, cover with the protective sheet, and press using the vinyl maker’s recommended time, temperature and pressure.
  7. Peel warm or cold, as the vinyl instructions say.

Care

Most makers suggest waiting before the first wash, washing inside out, and avoiding high dryer heat. Follow the vinyl maker’s instructions.

TREVOR: add photos of each step and your own press settings.
