A simple vinyl decal is the best first project for a new cutting machine. You will learn cutting, weeding and transfer in one go.

What you need

  • A cutting machine and mat
  • Permanent adhesive vinyl (for mugs, tumblers and outdoor items) or removable vinyl (for walls and temporary use)
  • Transfer tape
  • A weeding tool and a scraper
  • A clean, smooth surface to apply it to

Steps

  1. Pick a simple design. Bold text or a chunky shape is easiest. Thin script letters are hard to weed.
  2. Size it. Measure your surface and set the design size in your design software.
  3. Cut. Place the vinyl coloured side up on the mat and choose the matching material setting.
  4. Weed. Remove the extra vinyl around and inside the design.
  5. Apply transfer tape. Press it over the design and burnish firmly with a scraper.
  6. Prepare the surface. Clean it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry.
  7. Apply. Peel the backing, place the decal, burnish, then slowly peel away the transfer tape at a sharp angle.

Common problems

  • Vinyl lifting with the tape: burnish more, and peel more slowly.
  • Cut not going through: check the material setting and blade.
